Duke Stands Up for Gambling
Professional poker player Annie Duke publicly entered the fray several years ago
in efforts to not only repeal the UIGEA’s block on offshore online casinos, but
Duke works to also spread the message that poker is a safe and skill based game
that should be properly regulated and allowed into the marketplace. All of the
new action and potential voting on Barney Frank’s HR 2267 has Duke back out in
the public eye as she again speaks out against the UIGEA and in favor of
legislation that would repeal the controversial online casino ban and instead
restore civil liberties while creating a safe, secure, and taxed gambling
market. As a professional in the land and internet poker industries Duke has
worked with the PPA and lent her voice to the organization’s many campaigns to
raise awareness in the US about the current controversial internet gambling
laws.
Frank’s bill is slated for markup and voting this week and is the third of seven
bills that the House Financial Services Committee plans to debate and vote on
before the end of the session. Duke’s latest message is timed to coincide with
this new action in Congress and again highlight that the banning of the online
casinos through the UIGEA is not a bill aimed at protecting the American public,
but rather a bill concerning banking laws that really doesn’t have an effective
and appropriate manner of implementation in the US market. A key argument
against the UIGEA stems from the fact that it actually does not offer any
protective measures for gambling against the online casino gambling sites – that
is not the basis of the bill and instead it actually creates a regulatory black
hole where gamblers lack any government protections from gambling sites.
There is a very real need in the US for new legislation that actually directly
addresses the online casino gambling issue instead of working around the
situation and never actually regulating internet gambling in any way, shape, or
form. |
