Details on Play Now Incident
Play Now is the state-run new online casino gambling site that launched earlier
this month through the British Columbian provincial government. Play Now was a
highly anticipated launch within the BC and Canadian community because it would
mark the first time that a provincial government in the state was running and
regulating an internet gambling site. In the days after the launch though the
enthusiasm is waning and gamblers are now concerned about the major security
leak that occurred on the site’s launch day. The Play Now online casino site
malfunctioned on its launch day because of the huge volume of new accounts and
interested players accessing the site simultaneously.
The BC Lottery Corporation is running the online casinos in the province with
the Play Now site being the first and test-run. The site malfunctioned and
crashed by mid-day and gamblers were left wondering. What appeared as a simple
overload of the site, however, was much more serious when the reports began to
surface that the huge influx of data running through Play Now had actually
caused a security malfunction (possibly a hack) that caused the site to crash
and for some private player data to appear on the hacker’s computer screen. The
New Democratic Party did not release the new information about the online casino
incident until days after the event as the Play Now security team investigated
the site crash and the needed follow up actions to protect player data.
The fact that the Play Now site crashed so soon into the online casinos launch
is what has some critics and gamblers really concerned and that reeks of foul
play in the situation. This incident with the BC government’s attempt to create
a safe and fair internet gambling environment failing shows an alarming level of
incompetence in the BC Lottery Corporation to contend with the major
international internet gambling sites that have strong security measures already
in place and a high level of experience in the industry as well. |
