Censorship on Online Casino Industry
The issue of internet censorship is one that has really permeated the online
casino gambling industry over the past two years and sparked controversy in
nations all over the world. The two most notable countries in the internet
censorship debate have long been China and Australia. Australia is in the
process of a very blatant and invasive censorship of internet content from
online casinos to pornography and other sites deemed inappropriate. China on the
other hand goes far beyond just blocking porn and gambling and the content
filters and internet censorship extends into the media as well. Often
overlooked, however, is Turkey. Turkey has the largest censored content in the
world, blocking 4,000 websites as a part of the effort.
Online casinos and all forms of internet gambling are most certainly on the list
of blocked sites. But there are others that simply do not make a lot of sense.
Just recently Turkish internet users have noted that several Google services and
pages are now blocked as well. In fact, Google Maps has been blocked by the
Turkish filters as well as Google Analytics. What has frustrated online casino
gamblers and general internet users is the fact that the government has given no
warning that new sites were getting added to the list. Online casinos have been
consistently blocked since 2007, but the other sites have been slowly added to
the list over the past several years, growing Turkey’s list beyond the 4,000
mark.
There are ways for Turkish citizens to get around some of the blocks through
proxies and other services because really the internet censorship was intended
mostly for the online casinos and internet gambling sites but has now morphed
into a massive censorship effort that overshadows the original purpose and
places severe restrictions on civil liberties. |
