Ceding to Religious Online Casino Demands
The Malaysian government has just announced that it will not be legalizing
sports betting in the country although there were initial talks about this for
the past few months. The Asian governments are very tough when it comes to the
online casino gambling industry and have strict policies in place intended to
keep gambling sites out of the market and to harshly penalizing those companies
and operators who break the laws and bring internet gambling into the market.
Although the online casinos have long been highly blocked the Malaysian
government there has been a huge push lately to have the sports betting sites
legally licensed and allowed into the market by the end of the year.
The religious groups in Malaysia though are not too keen on having any forms of
legalized online casino gambling in the country, even if it is betting. Malaysia
has a high concentration of Muslims in the country who for religious reasons
feel that gambling and betting should remain illegal. In addition to the Muslim
groups there are a handful of anti-online casino gambling groups who are also
protesting the legalization and licensing talks. Gambling opponents claim that
newly legalized internet gambling will foster societal ills and other issues.
The online casino betting issue really came to a head this summer because Ascot
Sports was specifically seeking a Malaysian license to operate in the country
and though there was some support there was a far larger outcry against the
legalization that the support for licensing and legalization. It seems that
although Malaysia was on the cusp of some changes the government is going to
take a step back and continue thinking about the potential changes. |
