Online Casino Security Breach
The Canadian gambling industry had a major setback this week as the news media
latches on to the recent security breach that has compromised personal player
data on an online casino site that is just weeks old at this point. The British
Columbian government was incredibly eager to launch a state-run and regulated
gaming site, Play Now, that would operate through the provincial lottery system
and create a safer gambling environment for players. But the state-run lottery
had an alarming security breach that the BC Lottery Corporation is massively
downplaying right now, so there is no word yet on the level and invasiveness of
the breach.
Security within the online casinos is essentially one of the number one concerns
for internet gamblers, so this breach with the Play Now site is a major issue.
Although the lottery is staying very tight lipped on the precise nature of the
security breach and any of the real specifics the company is attempting to
communicate with players upfront so that new Play Now online casino gamblers do
not hear about the security issue in the sensationalized media accounts rather
than from the BC Lottery Corporation themselves.
One of the positive side effects though of using an internet gambling site run
through the state lottery is the fact that the situation will be fully fixed
rapidly and all player accounts at the online casino site are already being
monitored and settled appropriately. The main thrust of the security breach
occurred because the Play Now site was not prepared for the huge number of BC
gamblers that were interested in signing up for the site on launch day – an
issue that crashed the site and caused some data crossover. |
