Belgian Laws Protecting Land Industry
The Belgian government is in some hot water right now with the European online
casino gambling industry because of new laws that are designed to specifically
protect and give favor to Belgium based gambling groups. Two of the most
powerful internet gambling trade associations, the Remote Gambling Association
and the European Gaming and Betting Association, have teamed up to combat the
new Belgian laws in the European courts. The European Union has had a really
hard time effectively regulating the EU online casino gambling industry and when
countries purposefully choose protectionist measures it makes the job of the EU
courts and the European Commission that much harder to effect change and create
a level market for all EU operators.
The new Belgian laws that have the two associations, RGA and EGBA, up in arms is
a piece of legislation that would mandate that all foreign online casino
operators must obtain a Belgian license to operate in the market (not all that
uncommon in the current European gambling market) but then that these companies
must also be active in the Belgian land gambling industry too. This contingency
is enough to stop several of the more prominent online casinos from operating in
the Belgian market because they do not operate land venues anywhere in the
world.
Clearly the Belgian government was interested in a new measure that would give
clear preference to the existing land gambling groups in Belgium over the
foreign online casinos that are interested in competing within Belgium for a
slice of the betting and gambling public. |
