Search Engine Arrests in China
The Chinese government is taking very seriously its pledge to crack down on the
illegal online casino gambling industry operating extensively within the
country. Over the past several months the Chinese officials have announced raids
and arrests of very high profile gambling rings that were operating within China
and offering a wide range of illegal betting and gambling opportunities. The
last raid though was one of the more comprehensive of the raids and the Chinese
officials arrested a small handful of employees from the Baidu Search Engine.
Google has pulled out of the Chinese market and Baidu is one of the larger
alternatives for Chinese searchers. According to the Chinese officials several
Baidu employees actually worked within the company to illegal manipulate the
search results to allow the illegal “777 Real Online Casino” site to pop up in
the search results.
The employees arrested are being accused of manipulating the SEO results of the
online casino gambling site, but the owner of the gambling site claims that the
money paid to Baidu was for advertising only, not SEO manipulation. The case
specifically involves two Baidu employees who apparently accepted the bribe and
Baidu has issued out an official apology about the situation and notes that the
actions were completely outside of the company’s ethos and business policies,
particularly regarding the illegal online casino gambling industry.
The online casino gambling industry is fully illegal in China and Baidu notes
that the two employees arrested displayed bad behavior in this situation by
engaging in, and thus engaging the company in, illegal criminal activity. |
