Turkey Akin to China
China is regarded as one of countries most severely limiting civil liberties and
rights through the internet. The global outcry earlier this year over the Google
debacle and public debate has the online casino gambling industry, along with
several other internet based industries closely watching how China develops
internet filters and blocks. But while the global community focuses on China’s
censorship Turkey is already effectively blocking thousands of sites, including
the online casinos as well as other sites that have seemingly few questionable
qualities.
Turkey has more than 4,000 sites filtered and blocked from public consumption in
the country. And while there is no tally on what the Chinese government has
effectively blocked at this point there is little doubt that the number of
blocked sites would be equally as high. Although Turkey instituted these content
filters and blocks to stop the online casino gambling industry that original
purpose has expanded and the government has the method in place already to
easily block sites that the public does not agree with.
In this way, by allowing the content filters to go up for one industry, the
online casinos, the Turkish public is facing an information blackout similar to
what has happened in China. This is a key fear and one that gamblers are
currently protesting against and many Turkish citizens are hoping that more
public protests will spur government action to reverse some of the more
controversial blocks such as Google Maps, Analytics and other innocuous sites
that have little to do with the original purpose for instituting content
censors. |
