Unconcerned About Problem Gambling
It’s really quite interesting to watch the ebb and flow of industry news – mid
last year the hottest topic on the minds of international governments was the
question of whether or not the online casinos posed a greater threat of problem
gambling in the country than the land gambling industries. International
governments were watching the developments and latest case studies for evidence
that the online casino sites are responsible for problem gambling rises…but when
those conclusions were not reached by the research organization, the problem
gambling issue has largely died out of the mainstream media at this point.
Now, that’s not to say that problem gambling is no longer an issue, but rather
it’s no longer the fad topic of within the online casino gambling industry. A
lot of protectionist countries were trying to use problem gambling levels as a
justification for their protectionist policies and as a scapegoat for
maintaining self-serving national policies. Once the problem gambling research
indicated that the online casinos primarily maintain similar problem gambling
rates, politicians and governments no longer had strong footing.
But this lessening of the problem gambling fad is actually a bit worrisome
because without the media focus, problem gambling help initiatives are getting
less support from the public as well as from the online casinos themselves.
There is a needed balance for this industry so that it is neither acting as a
scapegoat by politicians nor swept under the table by the gambling sites and
pro-gambling citizens who are really trying to push some state governments to
enact more inclusive gambling regulations. |
