Recap 2009: UK Edition
Looking back a the UK over the past year is a pretty positive experience for the
most part – the country has experienced a growth spurt within the online casino
gambling industry that even last year’s economic recession could not fully
touch. The economy was a rough spot for gamblers all over the world, but despite
the economic concerns, many UK gamblers continued their gambling habits.
Although year-on-year revenues were a bit down from predictions as a result of
the recession, the vast majority of online casinos announced steady but slow
growth at their internet gaming sites.
One key point of contention within the UK has been the fact that the state
government has yet to fully change the double taxation structure that forces
online casinos licensed out of the UK to pay double the amount of taxes that
foreign licensed sites have to pay. This adds up to quite a hefty sum and
internet gambling companies complained about these taxes sending the online
casino gambling groups into the red. Several key gambling companies have
actually already left the UK for licensing and moved to more favorable tax
jurisdictions.
And no look at the UK online casino gambling market would be complete without a
mention of the rise in internet bingo. Although poker and chance gambling bring
in more revenue than the other sectors of the market, bingo’s star is rapidly
rising within the UK and this sectors of the market performed outstandingly
throughout 2009. Several popular bingo sites have launched into the UK market
this year and have found a strong foothold in the eager and waiting UK bingo
market. |
