Recap 2009: Italy Edition
The Italian gambling industry has seen some pretty major changes throughout 2009
– the government has slowly begun to open up the market to licensed foreign
competition as a way to better control the industry as well as better comply
with European policies that call for the free trade of goods and services
between EU member-states. Interestingly, online casinos still have not found
passage in Italy, but the betting market has absolutely exploded over the past
year. A strong component of the Italian gambling industry is the licensing that
takes place – any gambling group hoping for entry into the land and online
betting and gambling markets must apply for and obtain full licensing before
operating in the Italian market.
For Italy, this policy is the government’s key way to protect Italian gamblers
from exploitation and better control the influx of illegal gambling markets.
Interestingly, although online casinos can very rarely be successfully blocked
from a gambling market, because the Italian government is blocking the whole of
the industry on principle rather than a protectionist block, it has been largely
effective at gambling the casino sites out of the market.
And that’s saying a lot for the European online casino gambling industry in
2009. There is a lot of monetary potential within the Italian gambling market
and the fact that gambling companies are willing to play by the rules shows that
respect goes a long way. Italian officials are allowing fair licensing and
operation within the market alongside the gradual introduction of new internet
gambling mediums. |
