Recap 2009: Australia Edition
This past year was a pretty easy year for the Australia land and online casino
gambling industry – there were not a lot of solid changes although there was a
lot of movement in a negative direction. The Australian government is firmly
against the online casinos and that has shown throughout 2009 as the government
introduced new measures aimed at filtering out specific internet content from
the entire country. The international news media caught onto these actions
though and have blasted the Aussie officials for this strong move to limit its
citizen’s internet freedoms. The only other major movement within the online
gambling market has been the changes to Tasmania’s land and internet gambling
regulations.
The Tasmanian state government did not win any friends with its attempt to pull
all land and online casino betting activity out of the rest of the country and
into Tasmania. Although there was a huge outcry over a single week, all of the
fervor died down as the Tassie government abandoned the plans and instead
focused on expanding the state controlled betting group’s presence in the
international gambling market. Online casinos are illegal in Australia, but it’s
not illegal for Aussie companies to launch into the legal foreign gambling
industry.
Tasmania’s storm, though it died down quickly, has introduced a really
interesting approach to online casino gambling regulation that has never really
and truly been tried in the gambling industry – and it won’t yet. Although it
seemed like a great idea, other licensing and regulatory authorities essentially
beat the officials back into submission on the issue and the Tassie government
moved on from that initial plan. |
