Recap 2009: South Africa Edition
The South African online casino gambling industry has really changed
significantly over the past year – at least in theory. Most of the existing
gambling polices in South Africa reflect the bans and blocks that have been in
place for several years. But throughout 2009 the South African government spent
a lot of time drafting new regulations that would account for a full and legal
gambling industry with licensed online casinos operating for South African
citizens. The legislation though has been in the drafting process for quite some
time and toward the end of the year strong rumors began circulating that the
government might not actually pass the draft regulations.
That’s been the biggest problem with changing South African online casino
gambling regulations, the fact that many of the top politicians and government
officials do not strongly support a legalized gambling industry. The online
casinos are currently banned from operation, and were banned throughout 2009,
but yet foreign companies continued to target South African gamblers and
continued to accept illegal bets. For that reason, the government announced that
licensing was the only option that could adequately protect the South African
gamblers.
That’s how the year ended. The South African government is still in the process
of fine-tuning the regulations that could effectively control the online casinos
operating within the market. There was no clear decision on whether the
regulations were going to find full passage, but a strong hope indicates that it
is highly likely that the South African officials will eventually choose to
liberalize the market at some point in 2010. |
