Predictions 2010: Chinese Edition
The online casino gambling industry isn’t headed very far in China over the next
year despite simmering hopes in the industry. Several years ago the analysts
predicted that the Asian market would become a huge and lucrative market for
internet gambling companies over the next decade – and many of those predictions
did not adequately take into consideration that the Asian governments are not
wholly receptive to online casinos, and their position on the market is not
changing any time soon. Over the next year China has plans to implement further
blocks against the illegal online gambling and betting market, blocks that may
contravene basic internet rights that already don’t really exist in China.
In addition to efforts to further block the online casinos, the Chinese
authorities have announced that they will specifically work on eliminating the
huge amount of illegal match fixing that is coming out of China. The match
fixing cropped up throughout the latter half of 2009 and China has just begun to
aggressive tackle this alarming and growing problem.
There has been no real indication if the Chinese government plans to
re-implement the controversial Green Dam filtering program. This filtering
software was supposed to go in full effect over the summer but incredibly
controversy around the world from even outside the online casino gambling
industry stalled the implementation. There is no word if the government has
completely abandoned the filtering plans or if those efforts will resume at some
point this year. China is very strict about gambling in the country and 2010 is
another year of tight controls and harsh punishments for those who break the
rules. |
