Predictions 2010: South Africa Edition
The South African online casino gambling and betting market is in for some very
huge changes this month as the World Cup comes to the country. The World Cup is
the single biggest game in the global football (soccer) sporting industry. It’s
akin to the Super Bowl, but even larger because it does not happen on an annual
basis. This year’s event is taking place in South Africa and the country has
begun massive preparations to not only account for the influx of fans flocking
to the event, but to also accommodate the huge amount of land and online casino
betting that will take place for the months surrounding the World Cup. In fact,
the event is still half a year away and bettors have taken a keen interest.
The 2010 market in South Africa will revolve around the World Cup, but there are
also big hopes that the World Cup is going to bring with it changes to the
existing South African regulations that have been in the works for more than a
year at this point. The online casinos are illegal in the country right now, but
the government announced last year plans to slowly implement new, more inclusive
gambling regulations. That’s where the focus will likely be throughout 2010.
The South African government has already made some regulatory changes where
online betting is concerned to better accommodate the coming World Cup – the
betting industry has to prep the systems that will operate in the market to
accommodate the large scale betting. But while the land and internet betting
avenues have been cleared, the internet casinos are still biding time and hoping
for a legal entry into the market sometime in 2010. |
