It Doesn't Pay to Win
One of the big myths in the online casino poker industry, and one that is
perpetuated throughout the land and internet gambling industries, is the claim
that successful and skilled poker players win all of their hands. A recent study
though indicates that consistently winning your hands a lot is not actually the
strongest sign of a skilled poker player – the pros know when to lose and when
to take the win. Controlled winning is a highly prized skill of the poker pro,
both at the land and online casinos, and one that is a sign of success according
to a recent study of internet poker results out of Cornell University.
The study showcased some really surprising findings out the industry and the
nature of online casino poker gambling. Very clear results indicate a direct
relationship between the number of poker hands won at the table and a decrease
in bankroll. It seems counter intuitive really, but the Cornell Study analyzed
more than 27 million hands of poker to come out with these conclusions – a wide
enough sample to ensure any anomalies in poker player were being considered. The
study indicated that amateur and new online casino poker players get trapped up
in the idea of winning all of the pots – and they do take down the smaller pots,
but then they lose spectacularly when there is a lot of money at stake.
In addition to the analysis of the hands of poker and the correlation with the
bank balances of these poker players at the online casinos and poker sites, a
behavioral study also found results that provide a bit of an explanation for
this finding. Human behavior, particularly for untrained players is to seek out
the win and players rely more on the goal of winning every pot then the strategy
that is learned to only go after the pots that matter. |
