Online Casino Patent Action
It may have been over a year since the last major announcement in the case
between Bodog and 1st Technology, but the case has been moving along steadily
even without the media attention. And the result of this major case that shook
the online casino gambling industry and also called into question the power of
the US government, has been really surprising to most within the industry. 1st
Technology’s CEO, Scott Lewis has adamantly asserted his company’s right to
uphold a patent related to remote gambling and the implementation of these
online casino gambling services.
The former founder and CEO of the US facing Bodog Group very publicly denounced
these claims and has consistently asserted his right to use the technology
without licensing it from 1st Technology. The case got really ugly since Bodog
was not able to show up in court as a result of the US restrictions and blocks
on offshore online casinos. In more recent weeks though, the courts indicated
that 1st Technology had passed the validity tests and the patent will hold.
Bodog still asserts that the technology in question is not actually patenable,
but the courts and 1st Technology, and the patent authorities seem to feel
differently on the situation, meaning that the Bodog online gambling group could
be in hot water soon.
Now that the patent has been upheld by the US courts, Bodog is just one of the
many online casino gambling groups that are going to have to contend with patent
infringement lawsuits in the very near future. All of the defendant companies
claim the technology is not able to have a patent, but it’s just not going to
hold up in the courts unfortunately. |
