A Kentucky Lottery Win
The Kentucky online casino gambling market is a real source of contention these
days in the industry media because the Kentucky government continues to pursue
the seizure of 141 gambling domain names. The domain name seizure case has gone
on for well over a year now and made it all the way to the Kentucky Supreme
Court. This situation though is just backdrop from the recent news that a
Kentucky gambler hit a major national Powerball lottery win. And the two pieces
of information coincide actually because this latest win very precisely
highlights some of Governor Steve Beshear’s blatant misconceptions about the
gambling industry. Beshear and the Kentucky lawyers have argued that online
casinos and internet gambling in general are harming the Kentucky economy and
taking money away from the state land betting industry.
But then you look at the size of this latest Powerball win from a gambler in
Georgetown, Kentucky and it’s very apparent that the Kentucky government is
still benefiting from the US online casino gambling and lottery industry. The
winner hit the lottery for an amazingly high win of US $128.6 million. That
amazingly large sum is then taxed by the state of Kentucky for another amazing
sum of $3.5 million – that’s $3.5 million that is going directly to the state
government as a part of the tax on income. Here’s the kicker though, with
Beshear’s strong anti-online casino gambling stance, many are speculating that
the government should refuse to collect the tax.
That’s not likely to happen, but it’s pretty funny to watch this situation
unfold. Beshear’s office has not yet commented on whether the government plans
to tax the winnings since they are a result of illegal online casino gambling.
Over here at GambleCraft, we’re betting that Beshear is seeing green right now
and will accept the tax moneys on that huge Kentucky Powerball win. |
