What Will Estonia Market Look Like
The Estonian government made a controversial announcement this month that has
baffled the European Commission, angered some online casinos, but generally been
met with enthusiasm by other gambling groups. The Estonian government announced
a complete reversal on previous national gambling policies that forbid internet
gambling servers to operate out of the country. That ban has not been reversed
and any companies wanting access to Estonian gamblers have to base their servers
in the countries. This policy contravenes some of the free trade laws
established by the European Union between EU member-states, which has the
Commission on edge.
And the online casinos that do not have servers in the Estonian market are
angered by the requirement. But software development companies are on the up and
up because they can still easily access the Estonian market through software
licensing deals. The new online casino gambling industry in Estonian is designed
to generate significant revenues for the state government through taxation on
those companies basing their servers out of Estonia – a five percent tax on an
online casino’s gross revenues is the leading plan at this point.
Concern is mounting for Estonians themselves though because the Estonian
government plans to restrict the number of online casinos and poker gambling
sites operating within the market. International poker gambling is huge in the
country and Estonian poker players are worried they will no longer have access
to the competitive professional online poker market – a concern that even has
some Estonians considering leaving their country to find work in other EU
countries like Finland! |
