Pondering Poker Legalities
The United States market has a lot of conflictions right now and mixed/confusing
policies in place that have caused a lot of second guessing within the state
governments. The federal ban on offshore online casinos is incredibly ambiguous
and does not really specify which types of internet gambling constitute illegal
internet gambling. That being said, it’s widely understood that the online
casino gambling industry is specifically off limits right now. But it’s less
certain if the UIGEA and anti-gambling legislation extends to the games of
internet poker, bingo, or other forms of the game. Essentially, most analysts
contend that games of chance are strictly forbidden by the federal legislation,
but poker is arguably a game of skill, and individual state governments, like
Florida and California, are strongly considering extensions in the internet
gambling industry to include poker as a way to bring in more money into the
state budget.
The Florida government previously authorized an organization to conduct a study
of the pros and cons of an internet gambling industry in the state. That study
is concluded and the State Senate Regulated Industries Committee is now set to
review the results and conclusions of that study at the end of this month. The
reasons for the study are clear, the State of Florida is interested in
legalizing forms of online casino gambling as a way to boost the state budget.
California has also considered the legality of internet poker, and most lawyers
and analysts feel that the game of poker is a separate entity from the online
casinos, and that the federal government will not respond negatively.
At the same time though, there is the chance that the study has made conclusions
that indicate that the online casino poker industry is not worth the effort of
implementation. Implementing a fully internet-based poker industry in the state
will have challenges and expenses, and the study was commissioned to analyze and
conclude with a cost analysis of implementing or not implementing internet
poker. |
