Layoffs Feared in Australia
The government of New South Wales isn’t fear mongering this week with its
threats of layoffs and employees dismissals, it’s the very real truth that the
Australian state will face if the Australian government continues with plans to
severely curb land and online gambling activity in the country. The Australian
government is very specifically concerned with the online casinos that are able
to illegally operate in the country and the plans to limit even legalized
gambling and betting is a harsh reaction that could mean severe job losses in
several Aussie states.
The government announced recently plans to take some of the recommendations from
the Productivity Commission that call for stronger and tighter controls on land
gambling activity throughout the country. Additionally, these newly proposed
controls are not well received right now in the country because it takes many
powers and controls away from the state governments. Online casinos are already
banned at the federal level, but the Aussie states have all maintained control
over their own land gambling markets. The NSW government sent a letter to the
Productivity Commission explaining the actual affect that these newly proposed
policies will have on the people of Australia.
The letter outlines the fact that stricter controls at the land gambling venues
and limits on online casino betting means that many companies will be forced to
lay off employees to cope with the decreased demand and availability of
services. Job losses are a bit of a buzz word these days because of the economy,
and there is a hope throughout the industry that the Commission will hear that
concerns and adapt the new measures accordingly. |
