Iceland's Online Casinos
Perhaps this title is a bit misleading because Iceland does not allow legal
online casino gambling in the country right now despite a very tough economic
situation that could really stand for the infusion of more cash into the
government coffers. The Icelandic government has very stringent policies in
place right now that prevent many of the most lucrative forms of gambling in the
country despite the fact that a whole lot of Icelanders like to gamble in any
way they can. There is a big media and citizen level effort growing right now
that aims to legalize a larger internet gambling market in the country as a way
to funnel more money into the economy.
Iceland was hit incredibly hard by the global financial crisis over the past
several years – harder than many other nations that have already begun to
rebound. More similar to the US economy, the Icelandic financial industry just
seemingly collapsed under the pressure and strain of the global recession. As
Iceland continues to struggle to recover from the financial collapse, there are
many who view the online casinos as a viable way for the government to generate
some serious influxes in money coming into the country. The current Icelandic
laws only allow for a majority of lottery gambling and a few slot machines
legally operating in the country. But research and evidence shows that
Icelanders would be wildly accepting of a legalized online casino gambling
market, and that type of market would certainly pull in a far cry more money
than the current lottery gambling.
The government has not publicly considered the liberalization of online casino
gambling laws as a way to deal with the financial crises; a fact that now has
the Icelandic and international media boosting the profile of this plan and
really pushing for the government to consider at least implementing some sort of
gambling expansion in the country to combat the seizing economy. |
