Vying for Poker Play in Hungary
The Eastern European gambling industry is one of the hot subjects right now
because of the immense potential for growth in both the land and online casino
gambling industries. The newest concerns though emerge out of Hungary, where new
gambling regulations may pretty much squash the popularity of poker in the
country. Hungarians are gamblers by and large – the country already has a very
large gambling market and there has long been a hope to successfully launch
online casinos into the market in the near future. But the government may have a
different point of view that’s more focused on control of the market.
New amendments to gambling laws in Hungary will likely make small and intimate
poker rooms around the country completely obsolete. New gambling regulations
could very well force these small poker rooms to close their doors and poker
players would then be forced to the land casinos to participate in any form of
poker play. With these new amendments forming, online gambling companies are
even more leery about the ability to enter this market in the near future. The
European Commission is actually in discussions with Hungary because of the state
monopoly currently running in the country. The EU is working hard toward a
cohesive and inclusive European land and online casino gambling and betting
market, but a penchant toward state-run monopolies is not making this transition
a very smooth process.
Szerencsejáték is the state monopoly in the country – online casinos are not
legal, but the monopoly does operate all of the sports betting and most of the
land gambling that takes place all over the country. The new amendments are
really aimed at funneling more of the gambling activity into state controlled
measures that then benefit the state coffers through tax revenues. |
