Facing His Prison Sentence
The case that seems to have lasted on into infinity has finally concluded this
month, and the result is not wholly positive for the founders of the now defunct
BetonSports. This case has plagued the US online casino gambling industry for
three and a half years at this point and it has taken that entire time before
the courts finally tried the case and handed down sentences to the two men who
have been in jail and under house-arrest for this entire time. David Carruthers
was sentenced to a hefty three years (33 months) of prison time as a result of
his racketeering charges related to illegally operating BetonSports for the US
market. Online casinos are illegal in the US right now, but that was not always
clearly the case; part of Carruthers’ plea centered on his claim that he thought
that the sports betting company was operating in a gray area of legality.
Carruthers has served more than three years under house arrest while the courts
gathered evidence for his case and further investigated the complicated finances
of the BetonSports online casino gambling group. Carruthers is the former CEO of
the company and was one of the first arrests made in the case. After serving
such a long house-arrest sentence Carruthers was keen on ending house arrest and
entered into a plea deal with the courts. In admitting to one count of
racketeering and conspiracy the courts agreed to drop the numerous other charges
that Carruthers was facing.
Carruthers and his lawyers strongly hoped that the courts would accept
Carruthers’ more than three years of house arrest as time served for his
sentence, but the judge in the case handed down a pretty severe sentence, and
one that even his lawyers were not expecting. Because the judge believed that
Carruthers acted as CEO of the company while knowing that the business was
illegally operating a form of online casino gambling in the US market,
Carruthers must now face 33 months in prison. |
