Evening Online Casino Competition
The United Kingdom is making strong moves as the New Year takes flight to
rectify some of the hugely perceived wrongs that the country has perpetuated
over the past several years. The 2005 UK Gambling Act came into full effect in
September of 2008, and at that time the UK market became the most liberalized
online casino gambling market on the planet. But for all of the benefits of this
new liberalized market, some of the online casinos were not quite pleased with
the new changes and the advantages that the regulations gave to offshore
licensed gambling groups. The UK was already home to a lot of international
internet gambling groups and the new regulations were designed with a mind
toward increasing the effectiveness of the current licensing scheme.
That didn’t happen and as the injustices continued the UK online casino gambling
groups began to see the only viable way to remain lucrative was to leave the UK
market and seek out licensing outside of the UK. After a year of threatening to
leave the UK market because of the licensing structure, several companies made
good on the threats. That exodus of two major online casinos and gambling groups
was enough to trigger new changes in UK regulations. The UK Sports Ministry is
actively working with the UK Department of Culture, Media and Sport to develop
more inclusive and fair gambling regulations.
The biggest issue that needs address is the discrepancy between UK licensed
online casinos paying a high tax and the foreign licensed sites that have lower
taxes from offshore licensing jurisdictions but still have the same access and
advantages within the UK market. |
