Estonia Entering the Market
In the past month the Estonian online casino gambling industry has been lit up
in the international media – and not for the positive. The most notable link
between internet gambling and the online casinos was the illegal Israeli
gambling ring that was busted last month and hosted servers and obtained
licensing out of Estonia. This illegal gambling ring generated a lot of press
because it highlighted a flaw of the current international licensing system and
pinpointed some of the very real dangers of a massively international gambling
industry. Estonia took the brunt of the negative media publicity because the
country allowed a highly illegal gambling group to operate without repercussion.
Even more though is the fact that the online casino gambling group lied about
its Estonian licensing and server hosting. Because Estonia is very new within
the industry, the illegal Israeli gambling ring had no reason to claim its
connection to Estonia – a fact that surely would have raised some eyes. What’s
more worrisome now though is the fact that this small European country has
serious plans to enter the internet gambling industry by licensing and
monitoring online casinos as a part of the country’s new Gambling Act.
The European online casino gambling industry has had some very real problems
over the past several years with nations operating monopolies or restrictive
licensing regimes that were only aimed at funneling more money into the state
coffers rather than the support of an international European gambling market. As
the Estonian government comes into the limelight over the Israeli gambling ring
situation, the country seems destined to stay there for non-EU sanctioned
changes to online gambling policies. |
