Patent Dispute Specifics
The patent dispute in the United States has made headlines over the past several
years as 1st Technology started a major case against one of the largest US
facing online casino poker gambling sites. Within the case, 1st Technology
claimed that the Bodog Group infringed on the company’s patent for remote
gambling technology that is used at the online casinos and within several
sectors of the over-sweeping industry. 1st Technology aggressively pursued the
case in the US courts not only to uphold the patent, but it also came off as a
snub against Bodog, a company that has no way to defend itself in US courts
because of the company’s illegal gambling activity in the US market. The founder
of the entire Bodog Group, Calvin Ayres, did not take the patent case kindly and
the case got very ugly over the past year.
The key component of the case is whether or not 1st Technology has the right to
patent the technology in question. This technology is widely used in the online
casino gambling industry, and Bodog claims that it is basic enough to warrant a
classification within the public domain. But 1st Technology did file a patent
claim for the technology, and it was approved. And in light of all of the
controversy, the patent was reexamined over the past several months and found to
hold solid.
This judgment in favor of the 1st Technology claim is really important in the
landscape of the industry because it will now effect a wide range of online
casinos that have also, like Bodog, used the technology as if a patent did not
exist. The patent upholds the rights of 1st Technology and there is little doubt
that the CEO of 1st Technology plans to now sue other companies for patent
infringement in this coming year. In addition to allowing 1st Technology to
pursue other companies that have ignored the patent, it strengthens the
licensing agreement that 1st Technology has with current online gambling
companies for this technology and solidifies the company’s ability to remain
profitable off of its proprietary technology. |
