Online Casino Sites Blamed
The government of New South Wales in Australia announced earlier this month that
the Aussie state would face many layoffs in the coming months if the Australian
government proceeded with thoughts of liberalizing the online casino gambling
market. The land gambling industry in Australia is incredibly lucrative right
now and the state governments have strongly profited from the fact that most
forms of online casinos have been blocked from operating in Australia. Although
some sites have snuck through the bans, for the most part, internet gambling
activity is funneled through land gambling and betting operations. The
Productivity Commission in Australia is responsible for jumpstarting these
changes through a study and recommendation and the NSW government countered the
Commission’s findings with concerns and fears about rampant layoffs in NSW and
other states that currently operate large land gambling markets.
Some of the planned major changes recommended by the Commission include the
lowering of betting limits in the country and fully integrating the online
betting market into a legalized system. The illegal online casinos will still be
blocked for the most part, but internet betting and gambling sites legal to
operate in Australia will replace these foreign gambling companies and protect
Aussies from the social ills of internet gambling.
Many of the changes take place on a large scale though – like a plan to ban ATM
machines from gambling venues in the hopes of curbing overspending.
Additionally, the current betting limit of $10 would lower down to just a $1.
The wisest recommendation and potential policy to come out of the whole
situation is a plan to lightly liberalize the market and allow licensed and
legalized online casinos to operate throughout Australia – the part of the
situation that is most worrying for land venues. |
