Bill in the Wings
The stalled South African online casino gambling bill has created quite the stir
over the past few months as online casinos and betting companies prep for entry
into the South African market and hope that the new National Gambling Bill will
pass into law in time for these companies to setup for the upcoming World Cup.
The gambling bill has been actively in the process for about 18 months, and
several times during that year and a half the bill was completely finished and
ready to pass through the final stages – and right at that moment another issue
was brought to the table and the online casino gambling bill was stalled yet
again.
It’s been quite some time now and the South African lawmakers have finalized
their version of the national gambling bill that would license foreign online
casinos and betting companies for the South African market. Now the President is
stalling on the signing of the bill into law…perhaps because of the protests
from the anti-gambling groups who are asking for more time before the online
casino law passes. Legislators are asking that the bill come up for review again
in about six months while further studies are conducted concerning the impact of
full internet gambling licensing and regulation.
Many online casinos have respected the South African government’s requests that
gaming companies voluntarily stay out of the market until the new laws pass. The
patience of these same companies though grows weary as more stalls and
objections are seemingly raised on a weekly basis.
