Tribes Against Legalized Poker
The United States is on the cusp of legalizing internet poker and even online
casinos in individual US states and not everyone is pleased with the prospect.
Many of the US state governments are psyched at the money potential of legalized
internet gambling and are strongly considering intrastate legalization as a way
to boost revenues coming into the state budget. California was one of the first
US states to consider the online casinos, and internet poker in particular, as a
viable opportunity to fund state programs. Currently though, the majority of the
gambling activity in the state is processed through the tribes, and the tribes
are not pleased with the prospect of losing some business to the internet poker
sites. The California Tribal Business Alliance is erring on the side of caution
and negating some of the initial claims of potential revenue that this industry
could bring into the state.
Interestingly, the Tribal Alliance is nearly forced to take this stance because
of the divergence of opinion between the tribes. Some tribes are supporting the
efforts to legalize online casino poker in the state, while others are
vehemently against the opportunity. The Alliance though is merely questioning
the proposal by speculating and calling into question some of the loftier claims
about the potential revenue. There is no doubt that the online casinos and poker
sites are incredibly lucrative, particularly when operated through the state
government, but the level of money is subjective and only open to predictions.
In essence though, the tribes are protecting their own assets while strongly
asking that further analysis be done by unbiased outsiders to assess the
potential value of a California online casino gambling industry and the full
effects that this will have on state revenues from land tribal gambling as well.
