State of the Union: Online Casino Version
Just last month the President of the United States of America, Barack Obama,
gave the country a State of the Union address. The State of the Union is a means
for the president to summarize what has happened over the past year and also
give US citizens a look at the plan for the coming year – basically to give a
full coverage of what is going on, why, and what is being done. In honor of the
beginning of the year it’s about time we take a moment for a State of the
Gambling industry address. What’s going on with the online casinos? How is the
international market changing? What can gamblers and players expect in the
coming year on a wider scale?
The entirety of the global online casino gambling industry is a daunting topic
to be sure, but in short, there is a global battle occurring right now all over
the world as nations contend with the pervasiveness of internet gambling and
consider censorship and bans as a way to effectively curb illegal gambling
activities. Censorship is a loaded word though and nations like Australian and
China are carefully treading water as they attempt apply internet content
filters without creating too much of a major international outcry. The US and a
dozen or so EU countries have gone the route of banning and blocking foreign
online casinos and gambling activities in an effort to keep a protected and
enclosed gambling market.
The parts of the US government and the EU officials are in a similar predicament
as they attempt to create a level playing field for the online casinos which
both honors international trade agreements while also tightly controlling the
internet gambling industry through regulations and strict legislation.
