Online Casinos Want Spain Too
The European online casino gambling and e-commerce situation is only worsening
before it looks like it will get better. For several years now the European
Commission has negotiated with a dozen or so nations for more inclusive gambling
regulations that allow offshore online casinos access to their country. In the
past year though the European Court of Justice has gotten involved and largely
supports the agenda that will force countries to open their doors to foreign
gambling companies and foreign competition. Hot on the list right now is Spain,
a contentious disagreement has already erupted and the European officials are
asserting that Spain is breaking some EU laws by giving tax breaks only to the
players winnings from Spanish gaming companies.
Spain currently allows a few types of online casinos and internet betting to
operate for Spanish citizens – and although the country has recognized the
pressure from the Commission and is working with relatively open gambling laws,
tax laws in Spain right now give clear preference to Spanish based companies.
Players who gamble and win at offshore online casino sites are forced to pay
taxes on their winnings whereas that is not the case for Spanish based gaming
sites.
The European Court of Justice is finally, finally supporting the efforts of the
European Commission to better open the EU online casino gambling market, and
although there are a handful of countries receiving more of a focus for their
monopolisitic policies, the taxation policy in Spain is notably protective and
therefore not in compliance with the EU. |
