The Commission's Results
The UK Gambling Commission is one of the most advanced online casino gambling
regulatory bodies in the world. The Commission was launched as a part of the
2005 Gambling Act in the UK and the sole purpose of the Commission is to oversee
the way that the internet gambling industry is growing and changing in the UK
market. The Gambling Act greatly liberalized the UK market and gave the online
casinos a whole lot more opportunity to expand and advertise in the UK. With the
liberalization though comes an increased fear that the internet gambling sites
will go unchecked and get out of control; that’s where the gambling commission
comes into play.
The Commission frequently commissions various surveys of the UK gambling market
to assess the level of integration that online casinos have into the market as
well as the number of UK gamblers who frequent the various forms of land and
internet gambling. The latest study out of the UK was conducted by ICM Research
and surveyed a significant 7,000 gamblers to come up with the results.
Most significant of the results was the fact that more than half of the adult
population in the UK participates in some form of gambling – be it the national
lottery or the online casinos. Other details from the study indicate the average
age and gender of gamblers as well as many other stats and ratios that the
Commission will use to track how gambling is developing in the country over the
years. Studies are conducted and logged nearly every year to compare results and
monitor the situation.
