North America Shifting
The fact that both Canada and the United States are simultaneously considering
legal expansions into the online casino is a fantastic opportunity for the
foreign internet gambling companies that have been closely monitoring the
situation over the past several years. Interestingly, neither market is fully
regulating and accepting the internet gambling industry, but both countries will
soon see rapid expansions in the amount of gambling activity taking place at the
online casinos and internet gambling sites. Canadian provinces have decided to
take the matter into their own hands and regulate the industry in several
regions. Similarly, although foreign gaming sites are blocked in the US at the
Federal level, individual US states are bucking the trend and are on the
precipice of passing new legislation.
The North American market has been closed to the international online casino
gambling industry for some time – the US as a result of the controversial UIGEA
and Canada more by proxy of the US situation. Really, for all that the US
government bans and blocks a national gambling industry with foreign online
casinos, the Canadian government is just as passionate about gambling – just as
passionately indecisive we should say. Canada has no set stance on the internet
gambling industry and the individual provinces have recently taken that to mean
that they then have the power to self-regulate.
In both of these countries the economic recession and low budgets are a direct
contributing factor to why these nations are opening up their online casino
gambling laws – the money needs to come from somewhere and many state and
provincial governments have decided to regulate and profit from an activity that
is already taking place en masse in the marketplace.
