Keeping Gamblers in Check
The Australian government is in a very unique place right now – the country has
the ability to swing one of two ways. One: into a globally opposed regime of
controlled online casino gambling use through internet censorship and filters.
Or two: a regulated industry that protects internet gamblers through specific
government regulations and a clear licensing process. At present, the Aussie
government is leaning toward unnecessary (and even slightly scary) censorship of
Australian internet activity. The only saving grace right now is the fact that
the Australian Productivity Commission is finalizing its report on the potential
effects of a full Aussie gambling industry that accepts and controls online
casinos in the market.
The online casinos closely watching the Australian situation develop are very
skeptical that the Productivity Commission’s report is going to contain many
breaks for the internet gambling industry, but there is a possibility still. The
Productivity Commission’s report was commissioned by the government for the
purposes of better understanding the current landscape of land and online casino
betting and gambling. Thankfully, the Aussie government has not acted rashly as
it was once assumed the government was attempting to do. Instead of rapidly
filtering internet content before any strong objections could be made to stop
the filtering, the government took the public outrage and opinions expressed and
has since really worked to better understand the position of the online casinos
and where they might fit into the Australian gambling market.
There are certainly no promises this year, and 2010 will likely show some sort
of extreme changes to the Australian online casino gambling policies, but as
long as the government slowly and methodically considers the choices, there is
really nothing else the gambling sites can ask of them. |
