Fulfilling Fears
The Australian censors are fulfilling all of the international fears this week
as they release a more detailed list of the sites that will be banned and
filtered out of the Australian internet. Child pornography tops the list, and no
one in their right mind can argue that off of the list, but also showing up are
the online casinos and a handful of truly scary specific bans and blocks. The
international community expressed outrage last year when the Aussie officials
announced plans to block foreign online casino sites by censoring the internet.
Although there’s no arguing against the fact that the Aussie government wants an
effective way to block specific elements of the internet gambling industry, the
real fears surface over the world “censorship.”
Australia is a developed nation with a strong adherence to the notion of
personal and guaranteed freedoms and the censoring of any of the internet is a
dangerous step into new territory that has never before fully existed in the
developed world. The key fear was not about the online casinos or anything
industry related, but more so that the government would then have incredible
control to censor and hide information from the general public merely by adding
a site and information channels to the filtering list.
There has to be another way to better block online casinos without stepping into
this dangerous territory. Already the Adult Classification Board is jumping into
some of the more heated debates and looking to go far beyond just blocking the
promised child pornography and gambling sites – talk now of blocking images and
content with small-chested women is nearly as alarming as the announcement that
certain types of porn are also being blocked. These new develops directly feed
the international fear that the Australian censors would take their power too
far. |
