Legalization on Cusp for Iowa
The industry news simply cannot get enough of the growing legalization of online
casinos and sports betting in the US. Although the federal ban on internet
gambling still stands, the internet gambling companies have found a way around
the blocks by looking into intrastate gambling laws. The federal UIGEA has
little control over what the individual states do within their own borders and
as such states like Iowa are proceeding ahead with plans to legalize online
casino sports wagering in the state. Sports betting in the US has been under
strict control in the US for years, but as budgetary crisis in nearly every
single US state begin to surface, the prospect of an expanded online casino
gambling market looks increasingly appealing.
Right now Iowa is in the final stages of convincing all of the politicians to
support a new bill that will expand online casino wagering and include more
opportunities for the state to offer forms of internet gambling – which will
then be taxed and will feed money into the state coffers and be used to flesh
out the state budget. Many of the objections that have been raised have been
outright dismissed by logic; Iowa already licenses 17 land based casinos and is
therefore pretty much a gambling state. Some politicians claim that internet
wagering will increase the levels of problem gambling in the country, but what
is that argument in the face of the fact that it’s a situation of semantics.
The politicians who claim that one form of gambling is better than another are
not really looking at the whole situation; Iowa’s budget is really failing right
now and some simple expansions in the online casino sports wagering will make
huge differences in the state budget. As the new regulations are drafted the
politicians are taking all due concerns to ensure that the new sports wagering
companies will have a sensitivity toward the underage and problem gambling
aspect while at the same time they plan to allow collegiate sports betting – a
pretty controversial topic. |
