Online Casino Crackdown from China
The Chinese government is pretty serious about blocking and banning all forms of
illegal internet gambling in the country. The Chinese government went so far
last year as to try to implement strong internet filters that would be
pre-installed in all of the computers sold in the country. These computer
filters would then allow the Chinese officials to block a set list of
questionable web sites and then add to that list as more sites enter the market.
The key problem with this planned censorship is the fact that the Chinese
government would have surely abused the power to ban and block sites outside of
the online casinos.
The censorship/filtering plan did not pan out well and the government has pretty
much tabled that attempt for now and is instead looking at all of the other
potential routes the government can take to better block and ban most forms of
online casino and chance gambling. The government already has incredible control
over the internet content and sites available in China, so the new plans are to
form a team that will strongly cut down on the activity through all of the
avenues the online casinos use to access Chinese players – the sites themselves,
payment processing companies, and middle-men who place bets and work as proxies
for the gambling sites.
The crackdown is official and the government plans to thoroughly investigate
gaming sites over the coming six months. Essentially, the investigations will
take place from this month February, through August. In that amount of time, the
Chinese officials will scour the country for all banks, banking services, and
individuals who are facilitating the online casino gambling. The clean-out is
expected to be quite thorough so companies operating on the edge of legality
should be forewarned. |
