Count Charges Coming for Spain
The Spanish online casino gambling and betting industry is in for some big
changes over the next couple of months because of a recent ruling handed down in
the European courts. The process of creating a level and fair online casino
gambling market has been long in the EU, and very little solid progress has been
made. But that could all be changing now that the European Court of Justice is
more serious about penalizing those nations that are unfairly blocking or
restricting foreign online casinos merely as a way to keep a larger share of the
gambling monies. Spain is next on the list of countries that need to alter their
regulations and taxation structure or they could face harsh fines and penalties
from the courts.
Right now, the Spain issue is growing larger and gaining more media attention in
the EU because of the blatant disregard that these countries seem to have for
the notion of complete and open free trade. Just because of the big money
involved in online casinos, a dozen EU nations are unable to see reason or just
accept the policies and practices they agreed to when they joined the EU. Spain
listened to the Commission over the past year and altered online casino
regulations to include more foreign involvement – but then the tax laws gave
breaks to the Spanish based gambling sites so that gamblers would have a clear
preference to use the Spanish gaming companies.
Spanish gamblers currently do not have to pay taxes on their winnings if they
are using a Spanish gambling company – winnings from foreign countries are
subject to tax however…a real deal breaker for some gamblers. The EU courts
though have ruled that Spain has to apply that same tax break to foreign online
casinos if they also link their business to charitable interests – which was the
reason given for the Spanish tax breaks.
