Not a Perfect World
As US states and Canadian provincial governments begin to consider launching
into the legalized and taxed online casino gambling industries these governments
acknowledge that having to rely on gambling as a way to fund government budgets
is not an ideal scenario. In the wake of the recession that shook the US,
Canada, and the entire world the state and provincial governments were left with
huge budget deficits in place as they attempted to fund those same programs that
citizens have long relied on from the government. Funding, though, is coming up
short and the online casinos are a valid option for the state and provincial
governments to merely add a structure to the offshore gambling that is already
rampant in the regions.
Although the Untied States has banned US transactions with offshore online
casinos this has not stopped the US gamblers from finding those sites that still
accept US players and sending all of their money offshore. The Canadian
government has taken an entirely hands off approach and internet gambling
flourishes in the country without any regulatory or legislative tax structure in
place – also insuring that citizens are funneling their leisure dollars out of
the state/province. The taxation of the online casino sites has surfaced as an
incredibly viable way for the governments to bring in huge sums of money that
can be targeted at underfunded budget items.
Dalton McGuinty, the Premier of Ontario, really highlighted this fact when he
announced that the Ontarian government is planning to launch a regulated and
taxed provincial online casino gambling industry. McGuinty notes, that “in a
perfect world” the government would not have to go there, but that the
government is now consulting throughout the various branches and considering a
launch strategy for a safe and secure option for Ontarian gamblers. |
