Saskatchewan in Particular
News about the Canadian online casino gambling industry is rampant all over the
international news media right now because there is not only a lot of action,
but the provincial governments now have a lot more caution to consider as well
as the British Columbian debacle. There is no doubting that online casinos are a
lucrative part of the current Canadian market, and there is also no doubting
that the Canadian governments are losing out on all of that potential tax
revenue. But the careful provincial governments are concerned that legalization
and a state run monopoly isn’t as easy as it looks and instead of touting a
rapid solution, the Saskatchewan government is taking a step back and
considering all of the options.
The Canadian federal government has come straight out about the illegality of
some aspects of the online casino gambling industry, adding these to the new
Criminal Code and giving police enforcement more leverage. With this in mind
Saskatchewan is just the latest of the provinces to begin investigating ways to
legalize state run online casinos. Unlike the others though, the provincial
government is taking a much slower and methodical approach. One of the key
strategies is the wait and see – the government is waiting to see how Quebec,
Ontario, and other provinces structure their markets (and how they succeed)
before passing new laws and before starting state online gambling.
Even beyond waiting to see how the other provincial governments fair though,
several Saskatchewan politicians are mandating that the government commission a
study on the effects of the online casino gambling industry as well as the
possibility of implementation of a state-run gambling industry. |
