Online Casinos Depend on Reid's Voters
Congressman Barney Frank has spent several years developing an online casino
gambling bill that would repeal the controversial UIGEA and bring regulation and
licensing to the US market. For the first time ever the pro-internet gambling
bill has made it through a part of the House and one of the key obstacles it
will face is Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. Reid is a strong democrat who
would seeming support Frank’s efforts for regulating offshore online casinos,
but that is just on the surface, to win the Senate the internet gambling
industry will have to have the support of Nevada voters and the Nevada land
gambling industry. Reid is hugely affected by the land gambling industry and his
position in the Senate is directly tied to support from Nevada’s land gambling
industry, which means he will vote in line with what these companies want.
The land casinos all over the US have had mixed opinions on the online gambling
situation. There was a lot of opposition at first as the land gambling giants
feared that a full US internet gambling industry would make the land gambling
sites obsolete and pull revenues from these companies. In the intervening years,
however, since the UIGEA was passed many land gambling groups are beginning to
support the internet gambling industry and see the potential in expanding land
gambling industries into the online casino market.
The opinions are still very much divided on the situation so the online casinos
and the pro-internet gambling politicians have no way of knowing right now
whether or not Reid will support Barney Frank’s HR 2267, or whether he will
oppose the new bill at the request of the US land gambling industry. As the
Senate Majority Leader he will have a huge influence on whether this bill finds
support in the Senate. |
