The Union POV
The Canadian online casino gambling situation has escalated in the past several
weeks as some of Canada’s unions are concerned about the impact that internet
gambling will have on the Union employees that are actually working as a part of
the country’s land gambling industry. The Union concerned in this latest debate,
the Canadian Auto Workers, is asking the Ontario government in particular to
really consider the current proposal to bring in fully legalized and regulated
state online casinos. The Union President, Ken Lewenza, is very outspoken in his
request that the state reconsider the legalization and establishment of fully
legal internet gambling in the Canadian province of Ontario.
Lewenza’s goal is to look out for Union jobs and protect the workers from
potential legislation that does not benefit their positions. This is certainly
the case with the online casinos in Lewenza’s mind. What is not being considered
by the Unions is the fact that internet gambling is already prevalent in Ontario
and the state is merely looking at legalization as a way to generate revenues
for the province rather than sending all of the internet gambling money to the
offshore online casino companies. In Lewenza’s debate against internet gambling
he is taking the controversial position that internet gambling is so much more
dangerous and addicting than land gambling – a point that is no longer valid
since copious amounts of new research has clearly shown this is not the case.
The Ontarian officials though feel that a fully legalized online casino market
can actually stimulate the land industry at a time when hotel stays are down at
the land gambling resorts and locations. The provincial government believes that
there is strong potential to use internet gambling as a tool for land gambling
and the industries supported by land gambling as well. |
