Criminal Code Changes
The recent changes to the criminal code in Canada should not have an effect on
ethical and legal offshore online casinos operating within the Canadian market.
Although the Canadian has been forced to add in specific language in the
criminal code related to internet gambling, betting, and lotteries, the
government is still taking a hands-off approach to the legalization side of the
industry. The criminal code changes do not impact the online casino sites in any
way as long as they are conducting an honest business –that includes offshore
sites and sites operating out of the Mohawk territory through the Kahnawake
Gambling Commission.
The new criminal code is a significant step in the right direction for the
Canadian officials. Although their stance toward the online casinos is still
non-committal at best they have now given law enforcement officials all over the
country the tools needed to stop illegal criminal activity being carried out by
organized crime. This change to the criminal code was perhaps necessitated by
the sticky situation that the British Columbian government found itself in this
month when the government launched the Play Now site but yet faced a major hack
to the site in the first hours of operation.
The government run site was massively hacked by the criminals and there is no
telling yet what they plan to do with the huge volume of personal data they
stole from gamblers using the BC government’s online casino site. This sort of
criminal activity had little exact recourse in the Canadian government so the
changes to the criminal code will now give them much more power to go after the
hackers and prosecute once they are found. |
