Child Support Through Online Casinos
As the US moves toward legalization of the offshore online casino gambling
industry some of the key concerns are being addressed as a part of the bill –
issues about protecting state interests, keeping age verification and underage
controls in place and also protections for those children receiving child
support payments from a parent. It may sound a bit ridiculous but an amendment
that was approved and added to the internet gambling bill in the House Financial
Services Committee’s markup phase would require the online casinos to check the
child support status of every single new account holder. This amendment seems
like a good idea on the surface but also just might be taking this whole
protection aspect a bit too far.
Land casinos in the US are not required to check the child support status of
land gambling, nor are bars and other business in the US but yet the US facing
online gambling sites are singled out. There is a debate that has long raged
between the opponents and the proponents of internet gambling about the inherent
risks and dangers of internet gambling. One side claims that online casino sites
are more dangerous and carry a higher risk of problem gambling abuse, while the
evidence and facts indicate that problem gambling levels at internet gambling
sites are right in line with land gambling statistics.
One key issue is implementing this new amendment that was proposed and pushed by
Minnesota Republican Representative Michele Bachmann. Bachman and other
Republicans can be seen arguing that the online casinos do not have the
technology to properly administer age identification software and yet this new
amendment would require a much more in depth check to properly verify child
support status. |
