Censoring Gambling Sites

The Israeli government has made it very clear over the past several years that internet gambling is strictly illegal. This includes all forms of wagering, the online casinos, and even internet poker sites. Although some companies have servers based out of Israel for offering sites to other gaming markets, Israel has never allowed internet gambling. An influx – or perceived influx of gambling sites into Israel over the past year has prompted the government to react strongly with new measures to block and censor internet content at the Internet Service Provider (ISP) level – with the online casinos tops on the list of sites that will find themselves censored out of Israel.

The censorship debate is one that has been hit really strongly in the past several months because of the threats from both the Chinese and Australian governments to institute this exact same type of internet content block. The US, Europe, and several other Western countries claim that censoring out content, even if it’s because of the online casinos, infringes on personal freedoms. The Israeli government and officials are pretty unconcerned with the entire situation, however, and are continuing to block online casino sites right now as an initial step in stopping illegal gambling.

The Israeli government actually sees censorship as only one step in the process of ending illegal online casino gambling and betting that is happening in the country – there are more planned enforcement efforts that will take the situation to the next level. Censorship is the beginning and no interaction from the US or other interest groups is going to have an effect on the ISP censorship that has already gone into effect this month in Israel.
