Botnet Trial Pending
A recent botnet-related case concerning a young man from UK shows how even the
online casinos and gambling sites are not spared from the surge in malicious
botnet attacks cropping up lately. Gary Kelly is currently facing charges on the
grounds of operating botnet attacks,; organizing and participating in criminal
activities; and proliferating fraudulence mainly through GhostMarket.net, which
is a private internet forum with over 8,000 members. Along with Kelly, four
other people have been charged in the recent botnet attacks. The five British
individuals who organized the crimes provided GhostMarket.net members with the
needed data and the malicious programs that can illegally access computers.
Apart from this, they also disseminated fraudulent instructions on how to
manufacture crystal methamphetamine. What is intriguing is that Grace Kelly
revealed his case and posted it in a particular underground forum; with
statements on how he is currently being charged for credit card fraudulence, and
for scamming a certain online casino for $15,600.
Botnets are networks of computers infected by malware, and this growing issue
has been one of the most problematic parasites and pests in the internet. If a
computer is infected, it automatically carries out internet-related tasks that
the owner is unaware of. These tasks are mainly used for criminal activities and
fraudulent activity— through spamming, viruses, and various attacks on servers,
among many other methods. With botnets, online casinos and poker sites are at
risk; placing unsuspecting online casino players in a threatening situation.
Personal data and credit card information are just some of the important things
that become vulnerably exposed to botnet operators when a computer is infected.
In October, the five operators will finally face a pending court trial. The
trial will likely be a sensation, especially for online casino and internet
gambling enthusiasts who are eager to know more of the details related to how
these botnets run and perhaps discern a way to keep internet gambling sites from
falling vulnerable to future attacks.
