Oh Bachus, Why
Congressional Representative Spencer Bachus has once again presented his
Congressional constituents with his brand of the truth which is then labeled as
truth and fact. At the recent hearing in the House Financial Services Committee
concerning Barney Frank’s offshore online casinos bill, one of Bachus’ key
arguments centered on a recent article in the Orlando Sentinel that discussed
the current predicament that areas of Florida are facing as a result of the
internet cafes that are running land based sweepstakes gaming through computers.
Right now this is a gray area in the State of Florida – which means it is not
considered online casino gambling right now. Bachus though apparently did not
read the whole article – or perhaps he just misunderstood some of the
implications within the article?
During the Committee hearing Bachus used this article as proof that the internet
café problem in Florida is enticing the nation’s youth already and that
legalization of online casinos will only compound the problem. He used this
example over and over again during the discussion and markup phase for the bill
as a justification for the UIGEA’s blocks. The funny thing is, the Sentinel
article does not even get into the online casino gambling debate. The
sweepstakes gaming that is happening at Florida internet cafés actually falls
under the realm of land gambling legislation because all of the money processing
is happen on land both inside and outside of the internet café.
This is yet again another example of Bachus using false and misleading
information to prove a point that isn’t true! The Sentinel article was used by
Bachus to highlight the need to protect children from online casinos and yet the
article has nothing to do with the internet gambling industry! |
