Add Alberta Into the Mix
Alberta has been relatively quite over the past several months as most of the
Canadian provinces have begun to make a lot of noise about the launching of
provincially run online casinos. The Canadian government has chosen to just
blatantly overlook the internet gambling industry issue and refuses to regulate
the online casino sites accessing Canadian gamblers. In the past several months
nearly every single province in Canada has announced some kind of plan is in the
works to license and regulate their provincial gambling markets. Alberta has
remained silent, however, for months now but has now finally announced that the
Alberta government is also considering a state-run internet gambling site.
The bulk of the issue facing these provincial government is the actual licensing
and development of the online casinos themselves, as the British Columbian
government found out just last month. The BC government raced to pass through
regulations and launch a state operated gambling site – and within hours of
launching a vicious hack on the site turned the online casino situation into a
debacle of epic proportions. With the BC situation to watch out for now the
others are approaching the licensing and launching of sites with more caution.
Saskatchewan is still considering the process while Ontario, Atlantic and Quebec
are still really narrowing down their regulatory scheme.
Through all of this, Alberta is really taking a back seat and watching as the
other Canadian provinces sort through their regulations and stance on the online
casino industry. The province really wants to proceed with a steady and thorough
approach to ensure that an expanded land gambling industry does not increase the
incidence of problem gambling in the country. |
