Poker Players Unite in Mass
The Massachusetts land gambling bill that would greatly expand the land gambling
industry in the state by adding two new casino complexes created a lot of
controversy over the past several weeks because of a tiny clause within the
proposal that sought to ban and criminalize all online gambling activities
within the state. The online casinos are used to getting the shaft where
legislation is concerned, but the internet poker industry was not willing to sit
by idly. The Poker Players Alliance manage to mobilize 25,000 poker players
within the state of Massachusetts to oppose the clause in the new proposal that
would make internet poker gambling a felony offence in the state, punishable by
time in prison and a huge fine.
The PPA’s efforts were well rewarded within hours of an intense five hour
emailing campaign that bombarded the state politicians against the clause in the
new bill. The action was successful and the politicians responded to the
bombardment of emails by asking the PPA to “call off the dogs” and noting that
the politicians would work on the wording of the bill and ensure that the online
casino poker industry is excluded from any negative action within the proposal.
This campaign by the PPA was so incredibly effective that it shows the sheer
power that the public has when they unite for a specific cause. The online
casinos are another issue, but the internet poker industry has saved itself
within the Massachusetts market by sticking together and effectively pushing the
publicly wanted policies on the politicians. |
